Dr Hang T Ta and her group have
created and led a community project to raise awareness of healthy eating and
living in young children to reduce risk of heart disease later in life. The
group has organised the first event with 120 year-1 students at Holland Park
State School (HPSS) on Thursday 20 June 2019. The event targets both the
children and their parents.
Heart
disease is the single biggest killer of Australians and yet many people do not
know a lot about it. Although the clinical manifestations of atherosclerotic
cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke appear from middle age,
the process of atherosclerosis can begin early in childhood. The existing
evidence indicates that primary prevention of atherosclerotic disease should
begin in childhood.
“Healthy
Heart for Kids” is a 1-hour session organised by Dr Hang Ta and HPSS to raise
awareness of healthy eating and living for a healthy heart for all year 1
students. The session is run in parallel with a heart health talk for the
students’ parents.
